When did you start hunting predators?
I started hunting predators in 1995.
Why does your waterfowl show also include varmint hunting?
The show also contains predator hunting because of my passion for that sport. I love to call in animals and be able to get them to do what I want to. After a waterfowl hunt in the mornings we try to get out and shoot some predators during the day with all the time we have. The conservation is also a big part of why we do it. The number of birds that coyotes and foxes take each year will continue to grow if we don’t help control the population of predators.
The film crews allow us to get predators within 80 yards and sometimes 20 yards on camera which makes a great shot. While you can shoot predators from 150 yards out with the crews we are trying to get them as close as possible which makes it more difficult. Unlike waterfowl you never know where predators are going to be coming from. You can set up to try and get them to what you want but they are always changing their plans and surprising you.
What kind of calls do you use in the field?
I use mainly mouth calls while calling predators. I like to mix in bird sounds out of an E-Caller while I am distress calling on my mouth calls. I use all open reed calls as I think they are very versatile and their volume is unmatched.
When do you utilize E-Callers?
I do like E-Callers as they are great for getting the sound away from the hunting group or the guns. This gives the hunter the ability to get his gun and crosshairs on the target without the predator being able to pick him out. When the E-Caller is used correctly, it is a great asset while on stand. Another use is on a breezy or windy day. You can place the E-Caller upwind of the gun and as a coyote circles downwind of the sound, he will put himself in harms way most of the time.
When is the best time of the year to call in predators?
I love to call predators from late October throughout March. They will come to a distress call or most of that period depending on the amount of hunting pressure in the areas. Then whne late January gets here, we can mix in our coyote vocalizations such as howls, barks, whimpers, and breeding noises. There is something to be said about a coyote hunter who can consistently call them with their own vocabulary.
How does scent control factor into a hunt?
Scent control is huge because coyotes have awesome sense of smell. We wear clean clothes, spray down using Predator Bomb to mask our human scents. Coyotes know how a human being smells much better than we know how we smell ourselves. Learn all of the levels of scent control from wahing your clothes, storing your clothes, transporting your clothing and gear, spraying down when you get out of the truck and your success rate will go up for sure.
What would you say to someone who has never predator hunted and wants to start?
Hunting predators can be beneficial to any hunter as it lengthens their season to being year around. You can call predators pretty much anywhere throughout the entire year. It helps a hunter hone his shooting skills, calling techniques, and development of instincts needed to be successful in the field.
It is something you need to get used to. Knowing where and how many predators around make all the difference in success rates. Make sure you know not only know an approximate number of predators but also populations of what they are preying on, or the number of cattle or livestock around. The time of year depends on what they may be eating; they may follow the young in the spring to take advantage of those situations. The more you do it the more you starting thinking like them. Without thinking too much we will see a spot where I think we can call ‘yotes, so we set up and more often than not we call some in.
Tell me about season one of “Dead Dog Walkin’”
We are currently shooting season one of “Dead Dog Walkin’” and we are traveling all over getting great footage. We have hunts in Canada, Nevada, Oregon, California, Texas, Colorado, Kansas, and Mexico. Each show will contain 2-3 hunts on it and will include instruction on calling and set ups. We are using the same crews as always to keep the personality from “The Fowl Life.” We are putting our spin and personality into this show just like The Fowl Life and trying to make it fun, instructional, and entertaining. Once again we will try to revolutionize the way that hunting shows are made and this show will definitely do that. The show will air in April 2011.
Dead Dog Walkin’ will air on the Sportsman Channel at or you can see more at thefowllife.com. You can also see Chad's perspectives on waterfowl hunting
